Volunteering in Morocco – October 2017
I took part in a volunteer trip to Morocco in October 2017, and it was the first one that was really out of my comfort zone. After travelling to The Netherlands, I chose to go with a different organisation that seemed to be more organised as I would be arriving in a country I had never travelled to before. SCI Deutschland was great for smaller trips in Europe, however, I wanted to make sure that my first trip to Africa, and to a completely different country with a culture incredibly different from those I am used to, would go smoothly. Thus, I travelled with IVHQ; International Volunteer HQ.
I spent two weeks in Morocco, which I now realise was too short. In comparison with SCI Deutschland volunteer trips, IVHQ is a company that organises long-term volunteering experiences, rather than planned, 2-week ones. Therefore, the work one does with IVHQ is expected to be on a long-term basis. Although one can volunteer with them for as short as one week, many of the projects require a few days for one to feel comfortable and know what to do, therefore two weeks was relatively short.
Nevertheless, this volunteer experience, as all other ones I did, was very fulfilling and permitted me to learn a lot about a new culture, about volunteering abroad, about travelling safely, and about myself.
